Getting About
Las Vegas is a compact city and getting about by foot is easy but the hot desert climate means that long daytime walks can be hot and exhausting. Most visitors tend to make trips in short spurts using the air-conditioned casinos as oases. Most forms of transportation are air conditioned and visitors have the choice of taxis, cheap buses that run 24 hours a day by the Citizens Area Transport (CAT) company or even trolleys that run the length of the Strip. The grid nature of the city means that it is easy to navigate if a visitor chooses to hire a car. Details about organized trips to the desert, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon and the Hoover damn are available in the hotels. Visitors can sit back in air-conditioned coaches, hire a 4X4 or take a ride over Lake Mead, the Hoover dam and the Grand Canyon by plane or helicopter. The more hardy may opt for hikes in the canyon, but these are only for the visitor with the correct hiking equipment and adequate water supplies. Of course, for some visitors, the only trips taken are those from the hotel room (free for high rollers) to the casino floor and back again. Many of the hotels provide such elaborate entertainment for all the family from big shows (perhaps starring Celine Dion) to family attractions in order to attract visitors and to keep the ones they have. Visitors need therefore never to leave the hotel for entertainment.
